Case For Support

In low-income urban communities, the effects of period poverty are profound and often overlooked. Many young women, like Maya, a 15-year-old high school student, face significant challenges due to their inability to access menstrual hygiene products.

This issue is exacerbated by the ongoing stigma surrounding menstruation, which can lead to isolation, decreased attendance in school, and diminished self-esteem. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified this crisis. As we navigate the ongoing effects of business closures and unemployment challenges in marginalized communities, many families face financial hardships that make it impossible to afford essential sanitary products.

Surging prices and the rising cost of living significantly strain budgets, leaving little room for groceries and other necessities, let alone menstrual hygiene products. Period poverty emerges as a critical public health issue, affecting not just individual health, but also education and overall well-being for countless women, girls, and boys who bleed.

Period poverty presents numerous challenges that profoundly affect menstruating women and girls, impacting their health, economic stability, and education. Health challenges encompass both physical and mental well-being. Access to safe and hygienic menstrual products is essential, yet many effected individuals resort to unsafe alternatives due to lack of availability.

Inadequate facilities in schools and workplaces further exacerbate the issue, often forcing women to wear menstrual products for extended periods, or using alternatives like toilet paper and paper towels, increasing the risk of infections like urinary tract infections and bacterial vaginosis.

Studies reveal that women using clean, safe disposable pads are less likely to experience these health issues compared to those using reusable pads. Beyond the physical effects, societal stigma and shame surrounding menstruation prevent open discussions, leaving many women isolated and unsupported.

Together, these challenges create a cycle of disadvantage that hinders women's and girls ability to manage their health, pursue education, and achieve economic stability.
