Arkansas Women’s Outreach distributes monthly “period packs” to fight period poverty

For many Arkansans, a monthly period can come with a not-so-monthly worry: how to afford the products that make it manageable.

Chandler Perry, president of Arkansas Women’s Outreach, said period poverty is a persistent dilemma in the state where those impacted often can’t afford menstrual products.

Perry said period poverty can affect people living at or below the poverty level, but added it can happen to anyone.

When someone can’t afford period products, the consequences can be more than just inconvenience. “Most of the time you’re looking at, you know, embarrassment,” Perry said, adding that people may be forced to prioritize other expenses while menstrual needs go unmet.

Arkansas Women’s Outreach works to help by providing period products across the state.

The nonprofit distributes “period packs” that include tampons and a variety of pads — thin, thick and medium — designed to provide about a month’s worth of supplies, depending on what a person prefers to use.

Perry became deeply involved after volunteering for about four years, and that her own experiences helped drive her passion for the work.

She said many women feel embarrassed when they first get their period, and she wants to help reduce that stigma.

Those who seek assistance can connect with Arkansas Women’s Outreach through here. The nonprofit also has a Facebook page listed as Arkansas Women’s Outreach.

For those looking to donate, Perry said people can contribute products, money, host a donation drive, or even organize a “packing party.”

Donations of any size are welcome, including something as simple as picking up an extra box of tampons at the store to give.
