For some girls, getting their period means missing school because they don’t have access to basic menstrual products.

Period poverty is what the NPO, Humanity South Africa, is trying to tackle through its Dignity 4 Her campaign.

The initiative provides menstrual products to Durban learners in need, helping ensure that girls can attend school without worrying about access to sanitary products.

The organisation says access to menstrual hygiene products is essential to maintaining dignity, confidence and regular school attendance. Through the campaign, Humanity South Africa hopes to support more learners and raise awareness around the challenges caused by period poverty.

Founder Muhammad Masoom Bagdadi questions why menstrual products remain out of reach for many learners, while other essential health products are freely available.

He says access to menstrual products should be treated as a basic necessity, particularly for schoolgirls who may struggle to attend classes when they do not have access to sanitary products.

Bagdadi believes more needs to be done to ensure menstrual hygiene products are readily available in schools and public facilities.

“It is not a luxury, it is a human right, and each and every girl at school is entitled to free sanitary pads if they can’t afford it throughout the year. We have, in all our public facilities, dispensers for condoms, yet we do not have dispensers for sanitary pads in the washrooms in public places, which is a requirement which should have been a priority,” he said.

The organisation is appealing for donations, sponsorships and partnerships to help expand the initiative and reach more learners in need.
